It's clear that Liine was a small team of people that built an incredible product with very little resources. Their move to iPad was the right move but long term as a company I'm not sure how the best to sustain a product like this. From the looks of things online, I'm wondering if Richie Hawtin invested some in the company to create of their products. like the Kapture device.
The osc/midi controller business cannot be that profitable...
I also wish they would sell there lemur product to another company, or something like that.
Somebody with a greater vision for touchscreen controlling than Liine hat the past +2 years.
Cmon tablets never been so cheap as they are now.
Open source would be awesome 2, but open source has it downsides 2.
It can end up into many diff projects and some will have better support than others.
And to me this is the biggest flaw of Lemur "the Support”:
It's terrible.
Nobody wants to buy a product with bad support, no matter how good the product are.
Unless they are the type of guy that quickly can learn it without support.
I remember to begin with starting up with lemur was one side the coolest experiences ever and I quickly saw the possibility this app could do, over any hardware controller out there.
I wouldn't say it could replace a real knob or fader, but it quickly became the midi setup addon I always dreamed of.
And using basic GUI to place and setup midi items was easy, but the day I decided I wanted more, and turned to scripting...
Puuuuuuhh what a trip, all I had was 2 manuals(they couldn't even combine the old with new addon really?
) with really basic examples and a learning pack that I felt was like going from Step 1 to step 4.
I'm like where is step 2,3.
But luckily there was the forum and some of the threads got me passed to a point where learning pack now made sense.
And finally after a lot of puzzle on my own 2, I was finally able to build the stuff my mind was thinking.
And then..... Halfway thru all this the forum suddenly vanishes.
Omfg..... I'm screwed I still have so many questions I wanted to ask now..
Only reason I didn't give up, was the fact I didn't wanted to throw away +1 year of learning and projects that will be useful in the future once I learn how to build them finish like I want them to be.
At this point now I don't really needs liine help anymore I understand it all now 100% both normal and canvas, even created my own tools that enhance my work flow.
But now thinking of ppl who have to go thru all the same shit as me because liine don't care, made me create this forum.
And hopefully someday when I have questions again, there will be ppl who can answer 😂
I still think the touchscreen/midi controller marked has only begun, and just a question of once the right apps is released it will grow much larger.
Even on this forum I see ppl who are using lemur to control there light setups, and I couldn't think of better app than lemur for jobs like that either when it comes to having your own custom interface to recall settings on the big setup standing far away.
But as long the support is lacking and no proper documentation of what lemur truly can do for you. I fear lemur will end a cruel fate.
If u ask me they should do the following :
1: WAKE UP!!!!!! Stop sleeping, nobody has beaten your product yet.
2: Make 2 versions of your product a lite version(free) with no canvas support and limited amount of objects, whatever. So they atleast have a chance to figure out what it can do without wasting all that money. + a lot would properly just avoid it, since they not sure what they are getting for the money, when other apps similar to lemur cost a fraction.
And the standard/pro version with unlimited object and freaking larger project file size support they claim 48 mb is max, but I can't get my projects over 12mb ZzzzZzzz
3: And fix that retarded 256 bytes pr array, in general both in lists expression and midi/osc, we are not in the 90s anymore xD
Even midi devices back then could output and process larger sysex strings than that.
My current Ableton midi remote script has sometimes list full of 1000 items each contain a sample name, going from 8-16 bytes.
I hat to make a python function that count all the words and each time it gets near 256 it must cut the list send it and start filling a new.
And in lemur build more than a few scripts to combine that large list again, over I don't know how many expressions... Pfffttt..
But it's ok who says everything must be easy 😎 but still cmon......
4: Release better standard projects than just mere basic examples.
The only truly great project they released for it was there LiveControl2, the design and all is ok, but where is all the canvas to show off???
And even though the Ableton live midi script is nicely designed, why rely on that python must constantly update lemur with information like it has 0 memory
making it feel soo sluggish when using the note editor etc.. And I fucking know lemur ain't sluggish, but fast as hell.
So why give ppl the idea that there crown example of a lemur interface makes lemur look slow as hell.
When with a little more effort it wouldn't be sluggish, because my current project with ableton node editor, ain't sluggish cuzz I chooses to waste more expressions so lemur have to be updated less.
